If you’ve recently decided to invest in yourself with a smile makeover, you’re on your way to having a beautiful smile and the increased self-confidence that comes with it. With that said, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed in the beginning when you’re learning about the various procedures that can be used. In this blog, you’ll learn about the differences between two popular options from a cosmetic dentist in Marysville: dental bonding and porcelain veneers. Learn more below!

The Pros and Cons of Dental Bonding

Sometimes called cosmetic bonding, this procedure is done by adhering tooth-colored filling material to the front teeth. It’s perfect for minor chips and cracks, small cavities, and reshaping the teeth. Here are some of the advantages it offers:

  • It’s fast and can be done in just one visit.
  • The material is matched to blend in with the existing color of your teeth to look very natural (some people prefer whitening beforehand for this reason).
  • It’s cost-effective.
  • It usually doesn’t require numbing, unless there’s a cavity present.
  • Bonding lasts an average of 5-10 years with good oral hygiene habits and regular checkups.
  • Since your bonding will be set right away, you can eat, drink and return to work or school immediately after your appointment.

However, there are drawbacks to dental bonding in Marysville. It typically can’t be used for moderate or severe imperfections and isn’t as strong or long-lasting as other options. It’s also more susceptible to stains from coffee, tea, red wine, etc.

The Pros and Cons of Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are thin, strong shells of porcelain that are adhered to the front surfaces of the teeth. They’re matched in shape, color, and size to the rest of your smile and give your teeth a whole new appearance. Here are some of the benefits they provide:

  • They’re often excellent for more serious types of flaws, including chips, stubborn stains, cracks, minor gaps and crowding, and small or oddly shaped teeth.
  • Compared to other materials, porcelain reflects light more like your own teeth, so it will look very natural.
  • Porcelain veneers can last 10-20 years with good oral hygiene habits and regular checkups.
  • Since porcelain is stain-resistant, it will continue looking great for the life of your veneers.

Potential downsides are that it costs more than bonding and requires two separate visits.

Which Option Is Right For You?

Each person’s smile is completely unique, so the best way to know which procedure is right for you is to schedule a consultation with a cosmetic dentist. After evaluating your long-term goals and the severity of the flaws you want to correct, they’ll create a customized treatment plan for your needs.

But, regardless of which procedure they recommend, you can count on soon having a beautiful smile that you’ll love to show off!
