Can Invisalign Fix An Overbite?

An overbite is a malocclusion where the front teeth are more protruded. While most people would probably like to get an overbite fixed for aesthetic reasons, it can also increase your risk of developing dental problems.

Overbites can lead to more cavities, worn down teeth, and even lead to a painful jaw disorder called TMJ.

Traditionally, overbites were fixed by wearing braces or jaw surgery, depending on the type of overbite the patient had. But today, there’s an additional option that makes for a very discreet treatment process: Invisalign.

How Does Invisalign Work?

Invisalign is a type of clear aligner used to treat minor to moderate tooth alignment issues. They are a very popular alternative to metal braces because they are virtually unnoticeable when you wear them.

The aligners apply constant pressure to the teeth, which helps slowly move them to their most optimal position. Patients will need several aligners throughout their treatment. Your orthodontist will switch your pairs weekly or biweekly, depending on your treatment plan.

Can Invisalign Fix Overbites?

First, you should know there are two types of overbites:

  • Dental: The position of the teeth causes malocclusion
  • Skeletal: The overbite is caused by how the jaw bones overlap

If you have a skeletal overbite, unfortunately, Invisalign won’t help. These cases require surgery or a combination of braces and surgery to correct.

But Invisalign can successfully fix many cases of dental overbites. Though they cannot apply the same amount of pressure on the teeth as braces, orthodontists can use attachments to complement the aligners and fix even moderate cases of overbites.

Pros of Using Invisalign to Fix Overbites

Invisalign provides many compelling benefits:

  • Discreet treatment: The biggest perk of Invisalign is that patients’ self-confidence isn’t affected throughout the treatment.
  • More comfort: Though some soreness can be expected with new trays, they are more comfortable than braces.
  • Easier maintenance: The aligners can be removed so patients can eat and brush their teeth, providing much simpler maintenance.

Cons of Using Invisalign to Fix Overbites

Here are some downsides to consider:

  • Compliance: Invisalign only works if the patient commits to their treatment. You’ll need to wear the aligners for at least 20 to 22 hours every single day and resist the temptation to take them out unless you’re eating or cleaning your teeth.
  • Post-meal cleansing: Apart from removing them before eating and drinking anything other than water, you'll need to brush your teeth or cleanse your mouth with water to avoid trapping food with your aligners.
  • Less effective for complex overbites: Even with attachments, Invisalign is less effective for severe cases of malocclusion.
